Karachi to experience mostly cloudy weather with no chances of rain

KARACHI: The port city will experience mostly cloudy weather conditions with chances of drizzle or light rain at some places, Pakistan Meteorological Department said in its weather report.

Southern districts of Sindh including the coast have chances of light rain/drizzle. Traces of rainfall reported in Karachi yesterday, according to the report.

A weather official earlier said that no rain is expected in Karachi in the coming days but the city will stay cloudy.

Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz said in a report that the monsoon spell is far from the city as the monsoon belt has turned to the northern areas.

He predicted a monsoon spell expected by the middle of September and not necessarily in August.

The Pakistan Met Department (PMD) had predicted more rain this year. Kashmir, Punjab and Balochistan are expected to see more than usual showers, it said.

Earlier, the met office revised its rain forecast for the metropolis from July 25 saying that the monsoon spell has weakened and the city would witness drizzle or light rain rather than a previous forecast of heavy showers.

Shehzad Roy turns down online marriage proposal with hilarious response

Shehzad Roy turns down online marriage proposal with hilarious response

Shehzad Roy, Pakistan’s favourite age-defying celeb, has turned down an online marriage proposal much to the dismay of the hopeful… but at least it was funny!

Shehzad Roy, who is often touted as a ‘vampire’ by his legions of fans thanks to his evergreen youthful looks, was approached by a fan on Twitter who asked him to marry him after he shared his reluctant love for green tea online.

“One must always prefer green tea over mithaee, kyoonkay zindagi mein jo thori khushi mil sakti thi, wo bhi na milay,” Shehzad Roy had tweeted, to which a fan replied with a rather peculiar request: “I will make you green tea every day with my blood please marry me”.

While the proposal was unconventional, to say the least, Roy’s reply was equally hilarious!

“Please don’t say such things otherwise people will start calling me vampire,” he quipped, taking a well-timed dig at a long-running joke among his fandom!

We say… well played, Mr Roy, but we doubt that you can fool your fans any longer with those looks!

Former K-pop star Kris Wu detained in China over rape allegations

Former K-pop star Kris Wu detained in China over rape allegations

BEIJING, Aug 1 (Reuters) – Police in China said they have detained a 30-year-old Canadian man surnamed Wu on suspicion of committing rape, with state media identifying him as Chinese-born pop singer Kris Wu.

Wu was being investigated over accusations made online of “tricking young girls into having sex with him,” according to a statement by police in the Chaoyang district of the Chinese capital Beijing late on Saturday.

Kris Wu was publicly accused last month by an 18-year-old Chinese student of inducing her and other girls, some of them under the age of 18, to have sex with him.

The student told Chinese media last month that Wu had lured her into having sex when she was 17 after plying her with liquor. A police statement last month said the student was invited by Wu’s team to his house for casting in music videos.

Wu has previously denied the accusation and was not immediately contactable on Sunday. read more

Wu’s studio did not immediately respond to a request for comment. His law firm did not answer calls. The Canadian embassy in Beijing did not immediately respond to an e-mailed request for comment.

It was not immediately clear whether Kris Wu’s arrest was linked to the student who made the accusations in July.

Wu made his Hollywood debut in the 2017 sci-fi film XXX: Return of Xander Cage and was previously a member of the K-pop group EXO.

At least a dozen brands including Porsche and Bvlgari had cut ties with Wu after the accusation, which have caused a social media storm in China.

Chinese state media have indicated that Kris Wu’s celebrity status and foreign citizenship are unlikely to help his case.

“Foreign nationality is not a talisman, no matter how famous he is, there is no immunity. Whoever breaks the law will be punished by law,” said the Communist Party-owned People’s Daily on a social media posting on Saturday evening that referred to the case.

Dave Bautista’s joke about Scarlett Johansson’s ‘Black Widow’ lawsuit divides fans

Dave Bautista’s joke about Scarlett Johansson’s ‘Black Widow’ lawsuit divides fans

Guardians of the Galaxy actor Dave Bautista is Scarlett Johansson’s first Marvel costar to react to her lawsuit against Disney over the release of her latest film Black Widow, and his response left many fans divided.

Johnsson sued the Walt Disney Co on Thursday, alleging that the company breached her contract when it offered Black Widow on streaming at the same time it played in theatres.

Disney said there was “no merit” to the lawsuit, saying it had complied with her contract. It added in a statement that the release of the movie on its streaming platform had “significantly enhanced her (Johansson’s) ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20 million she has received to date.”

SCARLETT JOHANSSON SUES DISNEY OVER ‘BLACK WIDOW’, COMPLAINT REJECTED

Scarlett Johansson’s complaint, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, argued that the dual release strategy of Black Widow had reduced her compensation, which was based partly on box office receipts from what was supposed to be an exclusive run in cinemas.

Disney’s response was met with widespread disdain, with Bryan Lourd, co-chairman of the Creative Arts Agency (CAA), accusing Disney of attacking the actress’s character and of revealing her salary for the superhero movie “in an attempt to weaponize her success as an artist and a businesswoman.”

Soon after, Dave Bautista, who plays Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, took a seemingly light-hearted dig at the situation, taking to Twitter to joke: “Told em they should’ve made a #Drax movie but noooooo!”

Bautista’s joke that a standalone Drax film could’ve fared well for Disney and saved them a lawsuit elicited a bevvy of responses of fans, some of whom weren’t too thrilled about him cracking a joke at Johnsson’s expense given the situation.

“I really don’t know whether you are supporting her or dragging her down with this tweet, Dave,” one user replied, while another asked, “I don’t understand this tweet. Is this voicing out support for a fellow female castmate asking for her worth? If so, where’s the clear message? Or is this just an expressed resentment over a rejected pitch thrown as another pile-on on Disney?”

“…Scarlett’s contract was breached and she’s more than entitled to the damages they’ve caused her. She spent a decade creating one of the most iconic characters, suffered sexism and hyper sexualisation and now this… She deserved better,” another user chimed in.

US judge tells lawyers in Ghislaine Maxwell case to watch what they say

US judge tells lawyers in Ghislaine Maxwell case to watch what they say

NEW YORK, July 30 (Reuters) – The US judge overseeing Ghislaine Maxwell’s criminal case on Friday admonished lawyers not to make out-of-court statements that could taint the British socialite’s upcoming sex trafficking trial.

US District Judge Alison Nathan in Manhattan ruled a month after Maxwell lawyer David Markus said the overturning of actor Bill Cosby’s sexual assault conviction justified ending Maxwell’s prosecution on charges that she groomed and trafficked underage girls for the late financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Maxwell, 59, has pleaded not guilty to eight charges and faces up to 80 years in prison if convicted.

Prosecutors said Markus’ opinion piece in New York’s Daily News violated a court rule against lawyers making “extrajudicial statements” that could taint the jury pool.

Markus said he was not subject to the rule because he was not part of Maxwell’s defence team. But the judge noted that Markus had worked on Maxwell’s appeals from bail denials, and identified himself as her lawyer when communicating with the press and in the opinion piece.

“These facts mean that the public, which includes potential jurors, may perceive Mr Markus as an authoritative source of information regarding the pending matter and may readily consider his remarks to be accurate and reliable,” Nathan wrote.

The judge also said any lawyers in Maxwell’s case, including prosecutors, could be disciplined for violating the court rule.

Markus did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Cosby was freed from prison after Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court ruled that a prosecutor’s 2005 agreement not to charge him with drugging and assaulting a woman named Andrea Constand, which freed him to testify in her civil lawsuit against him, meant he should not have been criminally charged a decade later. read more

Maxwell’s defence team has said her case is similar because she had been immunized under Epstein’s 2007 nonprosecution agreement but saw prosecutors use her testimony from a 2016 civil lawsuit against her in their criminal case. Prosecutors have denied that Epstein’s agreement immunized Maxwell.
