Islam has nothing to do with terrorism: PM Imran Khan
Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Sunday said Islam is a religion of peace and it has nothing to do with terrorism.

Addressing the Muslim community of North America in Houston via video call, the premier said Islam is a religion of peace and teaches to live with peace. The act of one person cannot be attributed to that of whole community.

“Islamophobia is increasing across the world”, he continued.

The prime minister said Muslim places of worship were also attacked in Europe.

Referring to the situation in Occupied Kashmir, he said Kashmiris are under siege for the last 28 days.

“The current Indian regime is a follower of RSS, a hatred and supremacist ideology”, he said and added that  West will have to understand the philosophy of RSS in order to think clearly of this problem. The same philosophy led to the carnage of Muslims in the Indian state of Gujarat earlier.

Prime Minister reiterated we are talking of a country of one billion people, with nuclear weapons and extreme ideology and philosophy. Warning the world, Imran Khan said that India can go to any extent to divert attention from the burning issue of occupied Kashmir.

He urged the participants to raise the issue of Indian occupied Kashmir at every forum.

Five killed, including gunman, 21 injured in West Texas shooting

Five killed, including gunman, 21 injured in West Texas shooting
West Texas

TEXAS: A white male in his 30s who was known to police killed four people and wounded 21 others on Saturday in a gun rampage between the West Texas cities of Midland and Odessa that started with a traffic stop and ended when he was killed by officers, authorities said.

The suspect hijacked a postal van and opened fire on police officers, motorists and shoppers on a busy Labor Day holiday weekend before being shot dead outside a multiplex cinema complex in Odessa, police said.

Authorities originally thought there were two shooters driving two vehicles, but Odessa Police Chief Michael Gerke told a news conference on Saturday evening that he believed there was only one.

The gunman was heading from Midland to Odessa on Interstate 20 when he was stopped at 3:17 p.m. local time, Gerke said. He shot the police officer, took off west on I-20 and then exited at Odessa. There he drove to a Home Depot and opened fire on passersby.

“At some point the suspect stole a mail truck and ditched his car,” Gerke said. He drove the mail truck back east, pursued by police, before crashing into a stationary vehicle behind the Odessa Cinergy multiplex complex, where he engaged in a gun battle with police and was shot dead, Gerke said.

Video shown by a local CBS affiliate showed the white postal van crashing into a vehicle at high speed outside the movie theater complex before the man believed to be the shooter was swarmed by police. Screaming theater goers ran from the complex.

Gerke said the suspect was known to him but declined to comment on a motive for the shootings.

The Medical Center Hospital in Odessa took in 13 victims, including one who died, the hospital’s director, Russell Tippin, told reporters. Seven were in critical condition, two serious, and two were treated and released. One “pediatric patient” under the age of 2 was transferred to another facility, he said.

1.9 mn people lose citizenship in India’s Assam; Muslims’ mass deportations feared

1.9 mn people lose citizenship in India’s Assam; Muslims’ mass deportations feared

GUWAHATI: Almost two million people in northeast India were left facing statelessness on Saturday after the state of Assam published a citizenship list aimed at weeding out “foreign infiltrators”, in a process the central government wants to replicate nationwide.

A total of 31.1 million people were included in a final National Register of Citizens (NRC), but 1.9 million were deemed ineligible, according to a statement from the Assam government. Most of those excluded were expected to be Muslim.

Assam, an impoverished isolated state of 33 million, has long seen large influxes from elsewhere, including under British colonial rule and around Bangladesh´s 1971 war of independence when millions fled into India.

For decades this has made Assam a hotbed of inter-religious and ethnic tensions. Sporadic violence has included the 1983 massacre of around 2,000 people.

This has led to pressure from those who see themselves as genuine Assamese for a lasting solution — which they hope will come from the NRC released on Saturday.

Only those who can demonstrate that they or their forebears were in India before 1971 could be included in the list.

But navigating the complex process is a huge challenge for many in a region of high illiteracy where many lack documentation.

´Termites´

Members of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi´s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party-run Assam — and critics say the NRC process reflects the BJP´s goal to serve only its co-religionists.

In January India´s lower house passed legislation that grants citizenship to people who moved to India from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan as recently as six years ago — as long as they are not Muslims.

This has stoked fears among India´s 170-million Muslim minority for their future.

Home Minister Amit Shah, Modi´s right-hand-man, has called for the ejection of “termites” and said before the BJP´s thumping re-election victory in May that it would “run a countrywide campaign to send back the infiltrators”.

Those left off the NRC have 120 days to appeal at special Foreigners Tribunals, which the government says are being expanded in number.

But critics say that tribunal members can be underqualified and are subject to “performance” targets, and that the entire process has been riddled with inconsistencies and errors.

The number of errors has also turned some in the BJP in Assam against the process, with Himanta Biswa Sarma, a BJP minister in the state, saying it had left off “so many genuine Indians”.

“We have lost hope in the present form of the NRC,” Sarma told reporters, saying that the party was already mulling a “fresh strategy on how we can drive out the illegal migrants”.

Camps and suicides

Those who have been rejected by the tribunals and have exhausted all other legal avenues can be declared foreigners and — in theory — be placed in one of six detention centres with a view to possible deportation, although Bangladesh is yet to signal its cooperation.

Ten new such camps have been announced. One with space for 3,000 is being constructed in Goalpara, west of Assam´s capital Guwuhati.

The camps currently hold 1,135 people, according to the state government, and have been operating for years.

Nur Mohammad, 65, spent almost 10 years in one such camp until a Supreme Court order saw him released this month.

“I just want to ask them what is my crime? I was born here and lived in Assam all my life,” he told AFP. “I don´t know if my name will be in the NRC or not.”

Media reports say that there have been more than 40 cases of suicide caused by concern over the NRC.

Samujjal Bhattacharya from the All Assam Students´ Union (AASU), a key driver behind the NRC, said the register was necessary to protect Assam´s indigenous “sons of the soil”.

“We are not ready to live here like a second-class citizens in our own motherland,” he said.

Over 8,000 Kashmiris disappeared in custody in IoK

SRINAGAR: In occupied Kashmir, Indian troops in their unabated state terrorism subjected thousands of Kashmiris to custodial disappearance during the last twenty-nine years and the families of the victims have no information about their whereabouts.

According to the data released by the Research Section of the Kashmir Media Service on the occasion of the International Day of Disappeared, on Friday, over 8,000 Kashmiris have vanished in the custody after they were picked up by the Indian troops, police and paramilitary forces.

The report maintained that thousands of unnamed graves had been discovered in the territory and the human rights activists feared that these graves could be of the disappeared Kashmiris.

The impunity provided to the troops and police personnel through draconian laws like Armed Forces Special Powers Act, Disturbed Areas Act and Public Safety Act gave them the license to kill and harass the people and ransack their possession without being questioned and the tragedy is that the burden of proof is shifted on the victims.

On the other hand, the held valley is under strict a lockdown since 5th August when Narendra Modi-led Indian government announced the repeal of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution that granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

Due to the severe blockade, the residents are facing acute shortage of essential commodities including baby food and life-saving medicines and the valley represents a humanitarian crisis, as per Kashmir Media Service.
