New documentary series highlights the struggles of women activists in Vietnam

Screenshot from video ‘Full interview Doan Trang’ uploaded on 10 May 2019 by the 88 Project on Youtube.

A new series of video interviews highlights the perspectives and struggles of women involved in human rights activism in Vietnam.

The 88 Project, an organisation supporting freedom of expression in Vietnam, released the first video of an ongoing interview series with female activists in Vietnam. In the first interview with Pham Doan Trang, a dissident journalist and political activist, she discusses the challenges women face as bloggers and human rights activists:

In general, Vietnamese women are not respected. Not only in democracy activism but in all fields. In democracy activism, female activists are disadvantaged because they get attacked no less than male activists. They get beaten and assaulted. The work they do is no less than their male counterparts. But what they often get from other people is pity. I think it is not respect.

She also recounts an incident of police brutality which led to permanent injury to both of her legs.

During a demonstration to protect trees and the environment in Ha Noi, they attacked me and broke both of my legs.

Other women including social activist and blogger Tran Thi Nga, who is currently serving a nine-year prison sentence, have also been seriously injured following physical attacks, often conducted by hired men.

Tran Thi Nga’s attack was documented and posted on Youtube with recordings of her being wheeled into a hospital accompanied by her two young children.

According to family reports, Tran Thi Nga has been subjected to both physical and psychological harassment after her arrest, receiving death threats and beatings from a cellmate.

Screenshot from video ‘Full interview Doan Trang’ uploaded on 10 May 2019, by the 88 Project on Youtube

Despite the challenges faced by female human rights defenders both in and out of prison, Pham Doan Trang says that there may be a higher purpose when women are involved in political activism.

In a dictatorship nobody has freedom, but especially for women, their lack of freedom is multiplied many times compared to men. Because women are not only victims of the regime in terms of politics, but they are also victims of gender inequality and self-constraint. Women restrain themselves in thinking that they are not suitable for a political career. That politics are for men.

We should think that our fight is not only against dictatorship or to free Vietnam from a dictatorship. It is also a fight to free ourselves from the ideological constraints from the prejudice that we impose on ourselves until today.

According to the 88 Project database, there are currently more than 200 prisoners of conscience in Vietnam with over 30 identifying as female.

Bloggers and journalists are frequently arrested and charged for “activities attempting to overthrow the state” or “conducting propaganda against the state”. According to Amnesty International, the Vietnamese government has been conducting a growing crackdown on freedom of expression and peaceful activism over the past few years.

Nguyen Dang Minh Man, a photojournalist and the woman who has served the longest time in prison so far, is expected to be released at the beginning of August.

With more women activists in Vietnam, Pham Doan Trang emphasizes the potential of empowered women in Vietnamese society.

If women have freedom, they can develop themselves profoundly, and they will see that life is so beautiful, that there are many options, many opportunities, many things they can do, discover and develop, to contribute to the development of society and humanity.

GUJRAT: The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) has killed three terrorists in an encounter in Gujrat, while three others managed to flee away, ARY News reported on Monday.

According to the CTD spokesperson, the CTD personnel foiled a terror bid in Gujrat by meeting an encounter with the terrorists and killing three of them on the spot, while their three accomplices fled away from the scene.

The terrorists identified as Tayyab, Bilal, and Nadir, were trained from Afghanistan and were also named in the red book.

Arms and ammunition along with maps were also confiscated from the killed terrorists, said the CTD.

The killed terrorists were wanted to police in different cases including attacks on Pakistan Air Force (PAF) base in 2007, Sargodha Police Training School and Mianwali Police Chowki.

Earlier on April 12, Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) in a police encounter had shot dead three suspects allegedly involved in kidnapping for ransom in Peshawar.

Police said two alleged abettors of the abductors had managed to flee. Police said they had received a tip-off about the entry of the kidnappers in the metropolis.

“Snap-checking was conducted on all the routes leading to Peshawar from Khyber district,” said police.

CTD police said they encountered the abductors within the jurisdiction of Matni police station.

Trump lands at DMZ ahead of meeting with North Korea’s Kim

Trump lands at DMZ ahead of meeting with North Korea’s Kim

SEOUL: US President Donald Trump said on Sunday he and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un both want to meet at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) dividing the two Koreas later in the day, raising hopes for an encounter that could jump-start stalled nuclear talks.

Trump arrived in Seoul late on Saturday for talks with South Korean President Moon Jae-in after attending the Group of 20 Summit in Osaka, Japan, during which he made a surprise, spur-of-the-moment offer to meet Kim.

If Trump and Kim meet, it would be for the third time in just over a year, and four months since their second summit in Hanoi, Vietnam broke down.

“Well, we’ll see. He very much wants to,” Trump said when asked by a reporter whether Kim would meet him at the DMZ later on Sunday when Trump is scheduled to visit the heavily armed border.

“They’re trying to work it out. We both want to do it,” he said after a meeting with South Korean business leaders including the heads of Samsung, Hyundai Motor, Lotte, SK and Poongsan groups.

“It’s going to be very short, virtually a handshake. But that’s OK. A handshake means a lot.”

He said he and Kim had a “good relationship” but there was still a long way to go to reach an agreement that would end the North’s nuclear program in return for an end to sanctions and permanent peace on the Korean peninsula.

North Korea has pursued nuclear and missile programs for years in defiance of UN Security Council resolutions, and easing tensions with North Korea is one of the US President’s top foreign policy priorities.

Trump made the offer to meet in a message on Twitter about his visit to South Korea.

“While there, if Chairman Kim of North Korea sees this, I would meet him at the Border/DMZ just to shake his hand and say Hello(?)!” Trump wrote.

‘Very interesting suggestion’

In response, state news agency KCNA quoted a senior North Korean official several hours later saying it was a “very interesting suggestion” and would be a “meaningful occasion,” but that North Korea had not received an official proposal.

Moon told Trump during a dinner on Saturday that such a meeting would be an “historic event.” But even if it did not take place, Moon said, the offer would have a “significant outcome” because Trump showed sincerity to Kim.

Trump wanted to visit the DMZ during a 2017 visit to South Korea, but heavy fog prevented it. Kim and Moon held their historic first summit in the zone last year, which preceded the U.S.-North Korean meeting in Singapore.

Moon has championed efforts to end the hostilities between North Korea and the United States, vowing to play a mediator role in nudging Pyongyang into giving up its nuclear weapons in exchange for sanctions relief and security guarantees.

Moon’s press secretary said late on Saturday that a meeting between Trump and Kim would be a “crucial chance” to reinvigorate the talks. Moon said at his meeting with Trump on Sunday he would go with Trump to the border.

The Joint Security Area, with its cluster of distinctive bright blue buildings, has a checkered history of defections, tension and death. In 1976, axe-wielding North Korean soldiers murdered two American soldiers who were cutting down a poplar tree there to secure a clear view.

Trump, speaking at a news conference in Japan on Saturday, said he would be “very comfortable” stepping across the border into North Korea, as Moon did briefly last year.

Some South Korean analysts said another Trump-Kim encounter would do little to advance progress on denuclearization.

“Trump is trying to get a free hand in controlling peace on the Korean peninsula with his tweets and we can’t let that happen,” said Kim Dong-yup of Kyungnam University’s Institute for Far Eastern Studies in Seoul. “It’s a strategy and technique he adopted to deal with those who are in a weak position in negotiations, and that’s for domestic politics.”

Pride Parade celebrations are also a struggle for equality

Rainbow flags fluttered while the rainbow umbrellas covered the Maitighar Mandala, a symbolic monument located in the heart of Kathmandu, as young activists gathered for the first ever pride parade in Nepal on June 29, 2019.

Though an LGBTQ+ parade is celebrated every year during Gaijatra — a Nepali festival commemorating the dead and the alleviation of pain through humour that usually takes place sometime in August or September — this was the first time that such an event took place during international Pride Month. It brought together people of diverse genders and sexual orientations, evident in the wide assortment of placards on display.

Organizers of the pride parade wrote on Facebook:

Pride Parades are not just events for visibility and celebration of diverse sex, gender and sexual orientations, but also a struggle for equality. This year's theme on Pride Parade is: Inclusion of queer (gender and sexual minorities) at all levels of state and decision-making process[es].

Despite the inclusion in the Constitution, none of the bodies have any queer representative[s]. Lets [sic] join hands to celebrate the diversity of sex, gender and sexual orientation. #NepalPrideParade

Although Nepal has been somewhat progressive when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights — third gender activist Bhumika Shrestha received a passport with her gender marked as “O” for “Other” in 2015 and the Supreme Court of Nepal formally acknowledged the existence of a third gender on December 21, 2007 — there is still a long way to go.

Full of zeal and enthusiasm, the parade participants demanded equal rights, including same-sex marriage and the ability to adopt children. As they paraded from Maitighar Mandala to New Baneshwor, they also used the event as an opportunity to educate people about the diverse queer community, well beyond the regular term LGBTQ+.
