Australia’s COVID-19 deaths in virus hotspot fall to two-week low

SYDNEY: Australia’s second-most populous state Victoria, the epicentre for COVID-19 infections in the country, on Tuesday reported its lowest rise in virus-related deaths in two weeks as a second-wave outbreak eases.

Victoria said five people died from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, the lowest one-day rise since Aug. 15, while 70 people tested positive for the novel coronavirus, a seven-week low.

The fall in the number of new cases comes as the state capital Melbourne begins its fourth week of a six-week lockdown that sees residents confined to their homes, a nightly curfew imposed and large parts of the state economy ordered to close.

The restrictions are set to be relaxed later this month, with State Premier Daniel Andrews scheduled to detail the timetable for easing curbs on Sunday.

Health officials said Victoria is expected to reduce new daily infections to near single-digits by mid-September, down from over 700 new cases a day last month, but warned the risk of new outbreaks would remain.

“There will still be cases, there will still be outbreaks. That’s why these weeks and months ahead are so important,” Andrews told reporters in Melbourne.

Australia has recorded nearly 26,000 COVID-19 infections and 657 fatalities from the virus, far fewer than many other developed countries, although restrictions to slow the spread of the virus have taken a significant toll on its economy.

Official data due on Wednesday is expected to show the country has entered its first recession in three decades, while effective unemployment is set to top 13%.

Our world has become heavily dependent on the internet for almost everything. Wherever we go, we need to make sure that there is a fast WiFi connection. Along with it, come the password woes that we all face.

More often than not, we come across some outlandish and hilarious given to the connection. While that is one thing, their passwords can be as bizarre too.

One such instance went viral on the internet. A San Francisco based digital artist named Pablo Rochat posted a video on Instagram in which a poster is being displayed. On it, ‘Free WiFi’ is written as the heading in bold capital letters.
Its username is called ‘Good Luck.’ Funnily enough, it is perfect for the password that is about to follow. It consists of random characters in it and it goes on and on, until the end of the building wall.

Take a look for yourself at the rather ‘memorable’ and ‘overflowing’ password.

While this is happening in the first clip, in the second clip, a man is seen taking a photo of the never-ending password. Pretty sure, that will be a task typing it out but here even taking a picture will be as tedious!

Some might wonder that this long password is not possible. Technically, the longest WPA2 password should have at least 63 characters. However, the one in question seems to have crossed the limit.

Therefore, in all possibility, this could be a prank for which a lot of people might fall because, after all, the internet is free!

Since it was posted, the comments section has been buzzing with activity. Netizens were thoroughly amused by this. “I have all the time in the world,” one user said about typing the entire password.

Some of them also called him a ‘good neighbor’ for doing so with an abundance of laughter emojis. Some also wondered that despite all of this, what if it turns out to be incorrect? Well, only a person who has actually tried this out can tell if this is possible.

Man offers ‘memorable’ password for free WiFi

Man offers ‘memorable’ password for free WiFi

Our world has become heavily dependent on the internet for almost everything. Wherever we go, we need to make sure that there is a fast WiFi connection. Along with it, come the password woes that we all face.

More often than not, we come across some outlandish and hilarious given to the connection. While that is one thing, their passwords can be as bizarre too.

A post shared by Pablo Rochat (@pablo.rochat) on

KARACHI: Several areas of Karachi remained submerged and without electricity for more than 90 hours after unprecedented rains lashed the city on Thursday, ARY News reported on Sunday.

People took to social media to protest against prolonged power outages as K-Electric, the sole electricity supply company in Karachi, failed to restore power supply in some areas of the metropolis.

Several areas of Karachi including Defence, Clifton, Lyari, SITE area, Orangi, Korangi, Old City Area, Yousuf Goth, Punjab Colony, Maripur  Baldia Town, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, Gulberg, Sadar, Jacob Lines and MA Jinnah road remained without electricity since Thursday.

The prolonged power breakdown sparked protests and sit-ins on Sunday in several areas, including in Gulistan-e-Johar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Lyari and Korangi.

Further, Karachi Electric (KE) said that two feeders in DHA’s Phase 4 and Muslim Commercial had been powered up. “Clifton Block 7 and two of the three feeders in Bath Island have also been energised”, the power utility said in a tweet.

Earlier on Thursday, some 650 feeders of K-electric had tripped after heavy and incessant downpour, suspending power supply across 60 per cent of Karachi.

Due to the low lying topography of various parts of Karachi, the water deluged into K-electric centres paralyzing electric supply to about 60 per cent of the metropolis.

US coronavirus cases top six million

U.S. cases of the novel coronavirus surpassed six million on Sunday as many states in the Midwest reported increasing infections, according to a Reuters tally.

Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota have recently reported record one-day increases in new cases while Montana and Idaho are seeing record numbers of currently hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

Nationally, metrics on new cases, deaths, hospitalizations and the positivity rates of tests are all declining, but there are emerging hotspots in the Midwest.

Many of the new cases in Iowa are in the counties that are home to the University of Iowa and Iowa State University, which are holding some in-person classes. Colleges and universities around the country have seen outbreaks after students returned to campus, forcing some to switch to online-only learning.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Sunday said his state was sending a “SWAT team” to a State University of New York (SUNY) campus in Oneonta in upstate New York to contain a COVID-19 outbreak. Fall classes, which started last week at the college, were suspended for two weeks after more than 100 people tested positive for the virus, about 3% of the total student and faculty population, SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras said.

“We have had reports of several large parties of our students at Oneonta last week, and unfortunately because of those larger gatherings, there were several students who were symptomatic of COVID,” Malatras said.

Across the Midwest, infections have also risen after an annual motorcycle rally in Sturgis, South Dakota drew more than 365,000 people from across the country from Aug. 7 to 16. The South Dakota health department said 88 cases have been traced to the rally.

More than eight months into the pandemic, the United States continues to struggle with testing. The number of people tested has fallen in recent weeks.

Many health officials and at least 33 states have rejected the new COVID-19 testing guidance issued by the Trump administration last week that said those exposed to the virus and without symptoms may not need testing.

Public health officials believe the United States needs to test more frequently to find asymptomatic COVID-19 carriers to slow the spread of the disease.

While the United States has the most recorded infections in the world, it ranks tenth based on cases per capita, with Brazil, Peru and Chile having higher rates of infection, according to a Reuters tally.

The United States also has the most deaths in the world at nearly 183,000 and ranks 11th for deaths per capita, exceeded by Sweden, Brazil, Italy, Chile, Spain, the United Kingdom, Belgium and Peru.
