K-pop revs up Bangkok’s pandemic-ravaged ‘tuk tuk’ industry

K-pop revs up Bangkok’s pandemic-ravaged ‘tuk tuk’ industry

Bangkok “tuk tuk” taxi driver Samran Thammasa, 39, had never heard of K-pop star Jessica Jung before the coronavirus pandemic, but now the singer’s Thai fans are helping him survive the loss of tourists customers.

His bright green three-wheeled motorcycle rickshaw has been mostly vacant for more than a year. In the past few months, though, he’s earned about 600 baht ($19) a month to feature K-pop ads on his vehicle.

“The extra income may not be a lot for most people but it is for us,” he said, glancing at a shimmering vinyl banner of Jung.

Drivers of Bangkok’s distinctive tuk tuks have been among the hardest-hit by the pandemic’s devastation of Thailand’s all-important tourism industry, left haunting corners of empty city streets complaining of mounting debt.

Samran used to earn around 1,500 baht ($47) a day ferrying foreign tourists around Bangkok. Nearly all of that disappeared as visitor numbers fell by 85% in 2020, and Thailand is not expected to lift its strict border controls for months yet.

Unexpected help came this year from Thailand’s politically disaffected and K-pop-obsessed youth when they stopped buying ads celebrating their idols’ birthdays and album launches from public transport, and started giving their ad money to grassroots businesses, including tuk tuks and street food vendors.

Over the last few months, young fans have mobilised to put up banners of their favourite K-pop idols on the iconic vehicles for a month at a time, providing a new source of income for struggling drivers.

Tuk Tuk

Samran and many others now drive their empty tuk tuks around Bangkok with a banner of a different K-pop sensation each month, stopping for young Thai fans to take pictures and use their service, often with tips.

POLITICAL EXPRESSION

So far, the initiative has benefited several hundred tuk tuk drivers. There are more than 9,000 tuk tuks registered in Bangkok, according to government data.

The trend has roots in anti-government protests last year that drew tens of thousands of students calling for Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha – who first came to power in a military coup – to step down.

Many K-pop fans were protesters themselves, and last year vowed to pull huge billboard advertising fees from Bangkok’s skytrain and underground subway services – a longstanding lighthearted tradition for different fan groups – after mass transport shut down to try to prevent students from reaching protest sites.

The fans started printing vinyl or cardboard signs and recruiting tuk tuk drivers at garages and on the street – funnelling their ad funds to the people who need it most.

“It’s a political expression that we don’t support capitalists. This marked a change from us competing to book skytrain and subway billboards, but now it’s tuk tuks,” said Pichaya Prachathomrong, 27.

Pichaya herself raised 18,000 baht ($565) among Thai fans of the boy band Super Junior to promote member Yesung’s new album, before recruiting 13 tuk tuks via a new booking service on popular messaging application LINE.

The “Tuk Up” service, created by 21-year-old university sophomore Thitipong Lohawech, was initially to help dozens of drivers who rented vehicles from his family’s garage. But now it supports about 300 drivers from all over Bangkok.

“The fans are distributing income to the grassroots, which helps drive social change and support the economy,” said Thitipong.

Drivers said they have seen little of the government’s approved relief of around 967 billion baht ($30 billion), as handouts were mostly only accessible via a mobile wallet application.

“By the time the money reaches us, we’re nearly dead,” said Pairot Suktham, a 54-year-old driver who like many others doesn’t have a smartphone.

“The fans are our life support system and give us hope to keep fighting.”

Special ‘Black Widow’ preview screening rolls out red carpet for fans

Special ‘Black Widow’ preview screening rolls out red carpet for fans

Film fans young and old, some dressed as their favourite Avengers characters walked and posed on a red carpet in London’s Leicester Square on Tuesday for a special screening of the superhero story Black Widow.

The Marvel Studios movie, starring Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, the Russian-born spy-turned-Avenger, is among a slate of upcoming major releases postponed from last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and which cinema operators hope will revive ticket sales.

A recurring character in the Marvel cinematic universe since 2010’s Iron Man 2, Romanoff gets a standalone movie with Black Widow in which she revisits her past.

“From start to finish, this whole experience has been so absolutely crazy and the added time of two years has made it feel like it’s still not real,” actor Florence Pugh, who plays Romanoff’s sister Yelena in the film, told Reuters at the event.

“So the fact that people are possibly dressing up as Yelena and Natasha is so beautiful. I’m just really excited for people to see it. It’s been a long time.”

The traditional location for London film premieres, cinemas in Leicester Square only reopened last month, with social distancing measures in place. Tuesday’s Black Widow preview was held in two separate screening rooms.

“There’s nothing like watching a film in the cinema,” said Marvel fan Milly, who was dressed as Romanoff.

“It’s really nice that we … get to see this the way it should have been seen in the first place.”

Similar Black Widow fan events were also being held in other cities including New York and Los Angeles.

Cinemas hope to lure back audiences with movies like Black Widow; F9, the ninth instalment in the popular Fast & Furious franchise; and D.C. comics film The Suicide Squad.

“I did not think our film was going to be a part of the first wave of films where people would go back to the cinema and watch it,” Pugh said. “That being said, I’m so grateful that it is.”

Black Widow will be released both in cinemas and on the Disney+ streaming service next week.

According to details, the provincial government will appoint a commission to be headed by a retired judge of the Supreme Court for the purpose.

Adviser to the Sindh Chief Minister on Law and Environment Barrister Murtaza Wahab has finalised a draft for formation of the commission and sent it to the chief minister for approval.

The commission will allot 80-yard plots to affected people of the anti-encroachment drive along the port city’s Gujjar, Orangi and other nullahs. Apart from them, it would also consider Nasla Tower affectees and other cases.

On June 26, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed its concern over eviction of people living along Gujjar and Orangi nullahs in Karachi.

According to the experts, 96,000 people may be affected by the demolition of 12,000 houses along Karachi nullahs. The experts further expressed concern over the Supreme Court’s dismissal of stay orders issued by the Anti-Encroachment tribunal, which has saved some houses from demolition.

“In the wake of this decision, there are worrying reports that demolitions are underway again in Gujjar and Orangi nullahs, causing continuing stress and anxiety to residents,” the experts said.

WATCH: Man performs magic trick behind reporter during live TV show

In yet another disruption in a live TV report- although a sweet one- a man performed his incredible magic tricks behind a reporter as he was going live on the screen.

The video shows that as the news reporter presents the segment, the man begins his act behind him, seemingly making an endless stream of playing cards appear out of thin air before dropping each one to the floor, with the stage presence and facial expressions of a seasoned professional.

He then ensures his audience at home can see his hands are empty and proceeds to pull an entire deck of cards out of his mouth, before throwing them into the air, staring directly into the camera, and walking out of shot safe in the knowledge he has delivered the performance of a lifetime.

The hilarious clip showing a magic trick went viral after being shared on Reddit with the caption: ‘He has always been waiting for this live performance’.

Govt to allot alternate plots to Karachi anti-encroachment drive affectees

Govt to allot alternate plots to Karachi anti-encroachment drive affectees

KARACHI: The Sindh government has decided to allot alternate plots to people affected by the ongoing anti-encroachment drive along Karachi’s drains, including Gujjar nullah.

“These actions were undertaken by city authorities without adequate consultation with the affected residents, no relocation plan, and disparate and insufficient compensation for the displaced,” the United Nations experts said in a statement.

Pakistani influencer slammed for using sedated lion as a prop

Pakistani Instagram influencer Susan Khan has landed in hot waters after pictures and videos from her birthday party earlier this month went viral for all the wrong reasons.

Shocking videos from Susan’s birthday party in Lahore showed a sedated lion being used a prop at the venue, prompting animal rescue page Project Save Animals to take notice of them on Twitter.

A post shared by SK ✨ (@susankhanofficial)

Sharing pictures and videos from the night on Twitter, the organisation tweeted, “While I am not against birthdays and how people choose to celebrate them but I am severely against people using animals as props.”

“Lions were shackled left and right and paraded as if they were a new decoration piece. Which they’re not,” said Syed Hassan, the owner of the rescue organisation.

The post further questioned, “Why do we tend to forget that these are living, breathing beings that have the capacity to feel just like you? How would you feel if someone sedated you, tied you up and thrust you in an environment with loud music and screaming?”

Sharing more videos from the party in which Susan is clearlyy visible as proof that she was involved in animal abuse, Project Save Animals said, “Its honestly horrendous seeing as to how these influencers seem to not care about the animals. Not a single remorse… This lion has been sedated, shackled and is being thrusted back and forth just for this woman’s leisure.”

According to The Indian Express, two attendees who were present at the party shared that it wasn’t clear whether a guest brought the lion or it was illegally rented.

“In the videos, the lion is transported by a man in black clothes with white shoes, who is seen next to the lion throughout the party. Attendees said the lion didn’t leave his side,” they reported.

This isn’t the first time that the practive of using animals as props has been highlighted and slammed. A leading talk show hosted by a celebrity was also slammed with a hefty fine for using animals on set earlier this year.

Viral Twitter thread about sex trafficking is now a movie

Viral Twitter thread about sex trafficking is now a movie

A viral Twitter thread about one woman’s experience of sex trafficking during a 2015 trip to Florida has been turned into a movie, Zola.

Inspired by A’Ziah “Zola” King’s 148-tweet thread and a subsequent story in Rolling Stone magazine about her experience, the drama follows Detroit waitress and exotic dancer Zola whose customer Stefani convinces her to travel to Florida for a weekend.

But the trip soon turns sinister when Zola realizes they are travelling with a pimp who has other intentions.

“What I do is sex work and that’s what I’m used to and that’s what I’m confident in doing,” King said in an interview. “But the difference in here is I was put into a situation that the conversation turned into sex trafficking.”

King’s account of the trip, whose details she later said she embellished, lit up social media, trending under the hashtag #TheStory. Some of those she named in the tweets have disagreed with her depiction of what happened.

“I don’t really feel anything on that specific experience anymore,” King, a producer on the film, said about watching her story unfold on the big screen.

“I’m a completely different person in a completely different space. At this point in time when I watch the movie, I can enjoy the artistic side of it. … This is many different conversations. This is a sex work conversation, this is a race conversation. This is a feminism conversation.”

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom actress Taylour Paige plays Zola while Riley Keough, known for Earthquake Bird and Mad Max: Fury Road, portrays Stefani.

“I was a little bit stressed at first because I didn’t get to hang out with Zola,” Paige said of her role preparation.

“But (director) Janicza (Bravo) was like, ‘Remember, this is an interpretation of an interpretation of a perception and its hyperboles. So … this is like the exaggerated version.'”

Zola will be released on June 30.

Prince Harry, William to reunite for unveiling of Diana statue

Prince Harry, William to reunite for unveiling of Diana statue

Britain’s feuding princes, William and Harry, will put their differences aside on Thursday to attend the unveiling of a statue of their late mother Princess Diana on what would have been her 60th birthday.

For most of their lives, the royal brothers have been close, united by the shared trauma of losing their mother who died aged 36 in a 1997 Paris car crash when William was 15 and Harry 12.

But since Harry’s 2018 wedding to his American actress wife Meghan Markle, relations between them have soured and the couple’s explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey in March marked a new low.

In it, Harry, now 36, criticised his father Prince Charles and said William, 39, and the family were trapped, while the couple accused one unnamed royal of making a racist remark.

Biographer Robert Lacey said that in April the brothers quarrelled in the immediate aftermath of the funeral of Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth’s husband of more than 70 years, and there was no sign of any improvement.

“The conflict between Diana’s two bitterly divided sons does not seem likely to end any time soon,” Lacey wrote in the Daily Mail, adding that friends and family were trying to forge a reconciliation.

This week’s unveiling in London of the statue, which the princes commissioned four years ago to celebrate Diana’s life, provides a rare opportunity for such a rapprochement, with Harry returning from his new home in the United States.

“Unless one of them is going to say sorry, and I think that probably has to be Harry, I can’t see this relationship at the moment mending itself,” royal commentator Penny Junor said.

“My understanding is the boys are not speaking to one other, certainly not in the way brothers normally speak,” she told Reuters.

‘WE’VE BEEN THROUGH HELL’

Harry told Winfrey that their relationship was “space at the moment”, but hoped time would heal it.

“I love William to bits, he’s my brother, we’ve been through hell together and we have a shared experience. But we’re on different paths,” he said.

Thursday’s statue unveiling in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace where Diana lived, and which is now home to William and his family, will be a small event with the princes, Diana’s close family and the sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley among the few attending.

The Daily Telegraph reported that William would take his wife Kate Middleton and their three children George, Charlotte and Louis, for a private viewing of the statue before its official unveiling as they will not be present on the day.

Almost a quarter of a century since her death, Diana continues to captivate.

British newspapers regularly pore over her life and the circumstances surrounding her death, while the disclosure last month that a BBC journalist lied to secure a sensational 1995 interview with her recently made headlines.
