IHC reserves verdict on petition against aviation minister

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday reserved a verdict on maintainability of a petition seeking to stop Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan from performing his duties.

IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah took up the petition that requested the court to constitute a judicial commission to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the issue of dubious licences of pilots.

Advocate Tariq Asad, the petitioner, contended before the bench that Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar’s statement about alleged fake or improper licences of pilots has dented the image of the country.

He impleaded the prime minister, the National Assembly speaker, Ghulam Sarwar Khan and the Civil Aviation Authority respondents through the principal secretary and the secretary aviation.

Last week, Ghulam Sarwar had revealed that as many as 262 pilots, out of a total of 860 in the country, had ‘suspicious flying licences’, who would be grounded immediately.

“Their [pilots] licences are doubtful due to certain reasons including dates of examination and exams. There are some pilots, who did not appear in any paper, out of eight, but managed to get the licences. Among them are those working with the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), Airblue, Serene, private clubs and foreign airlines,” he said while talking to the media after presenting the  interim inquiry report on the PIA plane crash in the National Assembly.

U.S. coronavirus cases rise by 47,000, biggest one-day spike of pandemic

WASHINGTON: New U.S. COVID-19 cases rose by more than 47,000 on Tuesday according to a Reuters tally, the biggest one-day spike since the start of the pandemic, as the government’s top infectious disease expert warned that number could soon double.

California, Texas and Arizona have emerged as new U.S. epicenters of the pandemic, reporting record increases in COVID-19 cases.

“Clearly we are not in total control right now,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told a U.S. Senate committee. “I am very concerned because it could get very bad.”

Fauci said the daily increase in new cases could reach 100,000 unless a nationwide push was made to tamp down the resurgent virus.

“We can’t just focus on those areas that are having the surge. It puts the entire country at risk,” he said.

Fauci said there was no guarantee of a vaccine, although early data had been promising: “Hopefully there will be doses available by the beginning of next year,” he said.

COVID-19 cases more than doubled in June in at least 10 states, including Texas and Florida, a Reuters tally showed. In parts of Texas and Arizona, hospital intensive care beds for COVID-19 patients are in short supply.

His rival, Democrat Joe Biden, on Tuesday said that Trump’s “historic mismanagement” of the pandemic cost lives and inflicted more damage than necessary to the U.S. economy.

“It didn’t have to be this way. Donald Trump failed us,” the 77-year-old former vice president said in a speech in Delaware, where he unveiled an updated plan to tackle the pandemic calling for more testing and the hiring of 100,000 contract tracers.

In the past week California, Texas and Florida have moved to close recently reopened bars, which public health officials believe are likely one of the larger contributors to the recent spikes.

In Texas, where the number of new cases jumped to a one-day record of 6,975 on Tuesday, Houston hospitals said beds were quickly filling up with COVID-19 patients.

Dr. Marc Boom, chief executive of Houston Methodist Hospital, told CNN on Tuesday that his hospital beds have seen a “very significant” increase in COVID-19 patients, although the death rate has lowered.

Boom said he was worried about Independence Day celebrations this weekend, when Americans traditionally flock to beaches and campgrounds to watch fireworks displays.

“Frankly it scares me,” he said.

Gold rates rose by Rs26,000 per tola in a year

KARACHI: Gold rates continued their upward trend in the domestic market on Tuesday as prices of one tola and 10 grams of yellow metal recorded a marginal increase of Rs200 and Rs171 respectively.

Per tola price of gold rose to Rs104,650 after the Rs200 increase while 10 gram gold price increased to Rs89,720 showing an increase of Rs171, according to the chairman of the All Pakistan Jewellers Manufacturers.

All Pakistan Jewellers Association chairman Muhammad Arshad said gold rates recorded an increase of Rs26,000 per tola in the fiscal year 2019-20 as the precious yellow metal was priced at Rs78,500 on June 30, 2019.

Gold prices firmed near an eight-year peak on Wednesday, as the metal’s safe-haven demand was boosted by worries about the global economic impact of surging coronavirus infections around the world.

Spot gold was up 0.1% at $1,782.67 per ounce by 0336 GMT, after hitting its highest since early October 2012 at $1,785.46 in the previous session. U.S. gold futures were steady at $1,800.60.

Gold rates rose by Rs26,000 per tola in a year

Gold rates rose by Rs26,000 per tola in a year

KARACHI: Gold rates continued their upward trend in the domestic market on Tuesday as prices of one tola and 10 grams of yellow metal recorded a marginal increase of Rs200 and Rs171 respectively.

Per tola price of gold rose to Rs104,650 after the Rs200 increase while 10 gram gold price increased to Rs89,720 showing an increase of Rs171, according to the chairman of the All Pakistan Jewellers Manufacturers.

All Pakistan Jewellers Association chairman Muhammad Arshad said gold rates recorded an increase of Rs26,000 per tola in the fiscal year 2019-20 as the precious yellow metal was priced at Rs78,500 on June 30, 2019.

Gold prices firmed near an eight-year peak on Wednesday, as the metal’s safe-haven demand was boosted by worries about the global economic impact of surging coronavirus infections around the world.

Spot gold was up 0.1% at $1,782.67 per ounce by 0336 GMT, after hitting its highest since early October 2012 at $1,785.46 in the previous session. U.S. gold futures were steady at $1,800.60.

U.S. coronavirus cases rise by 47,000, biggest one-day spike of pandemic

WASHINGTON: New U.S. COVID-19 cases rose by more than 47,000 on Tuesday according to a Reuters tally, the biggest one-day spike since the start of the pandemic, as the government’s top infectious disease expert warned that number could soon double.

California, Texas and Arizona have emerged as new U.S. epicenters of the pandemic, reporting record increases in COVID-19 cases.

“Clearly we are not in total control right now,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told a U.S. Senate committee. “I am very concerned because it could get very bad.”

Fauci said the daily increase in new cases could reach 100,000 unless a nationwide push was made to tamp down the resurgent virus.

“We can’t just focus on those areas that are having the surge. It puts the entire country at risk,” he said.

Fauci said there was no guarantee of a vaccine, although early data had been promising: “Hopefully there will be doses available by the beginning of next year,” he said.

COVID-19 cases more than doubled in June in at least 10 states, including Texas and Florida, a Reuters tally showed. In parts of Texas and Arizona, hospital intensive care beds for COVID-19 patients are in short supply.

More than 126,000 Americans have died from COVID-19 and millions have lost their jobs as states and major cities ordered residents to stay home and businesses closed. The economy contracted sharply in the first quarter and is expected to crater in the second.

‘TRUMP FAILED US’

The European Union has excluded Americans from its “safe list” of countries from which the bloc will allow non-essential travel beginning on Wednesday.

The fresh rise in cases and hospitalizations has dimmed hopes that the worst of the human and economic pain had passed, prompting renewed criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump as he seeks re-election on Nov. 3.

His rival, Democrat Joe Biden, on Tuesday said that Trump’s “historic mismanagement” of the pandemic cost lives and inflicted more damage than necessary to the U.S. economy.

“It didn’t have to be this way. Donald Trump failed us,” the 77-year-old former vice president said in a speech in Delaware, where he unveiled an updated plan to tackle the pandemic calling for more testing and the hiring of 100,000 contract tracers.

In the past week California, Texas and Florida have moved to close recently reopened bars, which public health officials believe are likely one of the larger contributors to the recent spikes.

In Texas, where the number of new cases jumped to a one-day record of 6,975 on Tuesday, Houston hospitals said beds were quickly filling up with COVID-19 patients.

Dr. Marc Boom, chief executive of Houston Methodist Hospital, told CNN on Tuesday that his hospital beds have seen a “very significant” increase in COVID-19 patients, although the death rate has lowered.

According to latest data of the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), 4,133 new infections were detected after 22,418 tests were conducted in the previous 24 hours, taking the national tally of cases to 213,470.

More than 1.3 million tests have been conducted in the country while 108,273 COVID-19 patients are undergoing treatment and 100,802 patients have recuperated from the disease.

Indian troops martyr two more youth in Occupied Kashmir

Indian troops in their fresh act of state terrorism martyred two more Kashmiri youth in Anantnag district of occupied Kashmir on Tuesday, taking the number of youth martyred in the district since yesterday to five.

The youth were martyred by the Indian troops during a cordon and search operation in Waghama area of the district.

The Indian troops martyred three Kashmiri youth during a similar operation in Runipora area of the district, yesterday.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Senator Shibli Faraz on Tuesday urged the international community to take due cognizance of Indian atrocities against innocent Kashmiris in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir and hold India accountable under international law and relevant human rights conventions.

He said this in a special message for the online conference titled: “Kashmir: Regional and International Dimensions” organized at, Ankara University, Turkey.

The Information Minister said United Nations and the international community must take immediate action to stop India from changing the demography and distinct identity of Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

He said that the recent promulgation of “Jammu and Kashmir Grant of Domicile Certificate (Procedure), 2020” by Indian rulers  is clearly aimed at changing the demographic structure of Kashmir and undermining the exercise by the Kashmiri people of their right to self-determination through free and impartial plebiscite as per the relevant UNSC Resolutions.

SC overturns SHC order in Mehar triple murder case

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday overturned the Sindh High Court (SHC) order of transferring the Mehar triple murder case to an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC),  ARY News reported.

A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Mushir Alam announced a reserved verdict on an appeal. The apex had reserved the judgment on May 29, 2020.

Last year in the month of February, the Sindh High Court (SHC) had ordered hearing of Mehar triple murder case in an anti-terrorism court. The high court’s Sukkur bench announced its reserved judgment.

Last month, Advocate Umme Rubab Chandio had leveled allegations against Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) for protecting the killers of her father and other family members.

Addressing a press conference in Sukkur, she accused Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah of providing shelter to the killers and added that he is a major hurdle in the way of justice in the triple murder case.

Umm-e-Rabab said that her father, uncle and grandfather were gunned down by two former PPP MPAs in 2018. She once again demanded the arrest of the murderers of her father and other family members, who she claimed was enjoying police protection because of political influenced.

It must be noted that Umme Rubab’s father Mukhtiar Chandio, grandfather Karamullah Chandio and paternal uncle Kabil Chandio were gunned down on Jan 17, 2018, within the remit of Faridabad police station, Mehar taluka of Dadu district.

Umm-e-Rubab is pursuing the case of her slain family members by herself.

The case was highlighted last year when a video of a barefooted Umm-e-Rubab walking out from the court went viral on social media.

Rubab revealed that the decision to attend the court proceeding with bare feet was a sign of protest against the justice system, “which is not deemed fair and impartial in many instances,” claimed Rubab.

Pakistan People’s Party MPAs Nawab Sardar Ahmed Chandio and his brother Nawab Burhan Khan Chandio were nominated in the triple murder case last year in January but were granted a pre-arrest bail from the court.

CTD registers FIR of Pakistan Stock Exchange attack

KARACHI: An FIR of Monday’s terrorist attack on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) building has been registered by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD).

The FIR was registered at the CTD Civil Lines police station under sections of terrorism, possession of explosive material, encounter with the police, murder and attempted murder.

The sections include 302 (punishment for murder), 324 (murder attempt), 353 (attack on on-duty public servant) of the Pakistan  Penal Code and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).

Four gunmen had attacked the Pakistan Stock Exchange building in Karachi on Monday, killing two guards and a policeman before security forces killed all four of the attackers, police said.

Toshakhana case: Court moves to declare Sharif fugitive, issues arrest warrants for Zardari

ISLAMABAD: An accountability court of Islamabad on Tuesday issued bailable arrest warrants against former president Asif Ali Zardari and started the process of declaring former premier Nawaz Sharif a proclaimed offender in a reference accusing them and ex-PM Yousuf Raza Gillani of receiving luxury vehicles and gifts from Toshakhana.

A National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecutor submitted a compliance report to Accountability Judge Asghar Ali stating that the bureau forwarded arrest warrants against Sharif, who is in London, through the Foreign Office.

Observing that the PML-N supreme leader is not joining the trial proceedings intentionally, the judge issued directives for starting the process of declaring him a proclaimed offender over perpetual absence from the hearing.

Senator Farooq H Naek, who represented the PPP co-chairman, moved an application on behalf of his client requesting the court to grant him exemption from personal appearance in today’s hearing due to the coronavirus fears.

He said Zardari, being a senior citizen, can’t turn up because of the pandemic.

This is a criminal case as Asif Zardari will have to show up, the judge observed, asking if the former president was diagnosed with the disease. The counsel replied that people will gather on the court premises because of the PPP leader’s appearance, putting not only themselves but him at potential risk of catching the contagion.

Prosecutor Sardar Muzaffar said it is up to the administration to prevent people from gathering, requesting the judge to not extend any concession to the former president and demanding his arrest warrants.

He said the court gave Yousuf Raza Gillani exemption from personal appearance, due to which his counsel has not even turned up before the court, pleading with the court to withdraw the exemption granted to him.

Farooq H Naek argued that the court can issue warrants in case Zardari doesn’t appear, assuring he will show up on next hearing. He said ex-PM Gillani had gone into self-isolation after being diagnosed with the virus.

The FIR was registered at the CTD Civil Lines police station under sections of terrorism, possession of explosive material, encounter with the police, murder and attempted murder.

The sections include 302 (punishment for murder), 324 (murder attempt), 353 (attack on on-duty public servant) of the Pakistan  Penal Code and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).

Other sections including those of the Sindh Arms Act have also been inserted into the FIR.

Toshakhana case: Court moves to declare Sharif fugitive, issues arrest warrants for Zardari

ISLAMABAD: An accountability court of Islamabad on Tuesday issued bailable arrest warrants against former president Asif Ali Zardari and started the process of declaring former premier Nawaz Sharif a proclaimed offender in a reference accusing them and ex-PM Yousuf Raza Gillani of receiving luxury vehicles and gifts from Toshakhana.

A National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecutor submitted a compliance report to Accountability Judge Asghar Ali stating that the bureau forwarded arrest warrants against Sharif, who is in London, through the Foreign Office.

Observing that the PML-N supreme leader is not joining the trial proceedings intentionally, the judge issued directives for starting the process of declaring him a proclaimed offender over perpetual absence from the hearing.

Senator Farooq H Naek, who represented the PPP co-chairman, moved an application on behalf of his client requesting the court to grant him exemption from personal appearance in today’s hearing due to the coronavirus fears.

He said Zardari, being a senior citizen, can’t turn up because of the pandemic.

This is a criminal case as Asif Zardari will have to show up, the judge observed, asking if the former president was diagnosed with the disease. The counsel replied that people will gather on the court premises because of the PPP leader’s appearance, putting not only themselves but him at potential risk of catching the contagion.

Prosecutor Sardar Muzaffar said it is up to the administration to prevent people from gathering, requesting the judge to not extend any concession to the former president and demanding his arrest warrants.

He said the court gave Yousuf Raza Gillani exemption from personal appearance, due to which his counsel has not even turned up before the court, pleading with the court to withdraw the exemption granted to him.

Farooq H Naek argued that the court can issue warrants in case Zardari doesn’t appear, assuring he will show up on next hearing. He said ex-PM Gillani had gone into self-isolation after being diagnosed with the virus.

According to details, a fire at the 500kv Jamshoro grid station of National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) left several cities of Sindh completely without power.

A power outage was reported at Hyderabad, Jamshoro, Sehwan, Thana Bola Khan, Noriabad, Kotri, Tandojam, Tando Allahyar, Matiari, Thatta, and several parts of Karachi.

The power supply to Karachi was suspended too. The K-Electric, in a statement, said that the grid station provides power supply of 600 Megawatts to the city, of which 200 MW was suspended.

The blaze was contained and extinguished within two hours. Four fire trucks participated in the operation.

Gold rates record Rs900/tola increase

KARACHI: Gold rates continued their upward trend in the domestic market on Monday as per tola price of yellow metal rose to Rs104,100 after an increase of Rs9,00.

Likewise, 10 gram gold price rose to Rs89,248 showing an increase of Rs771.

Rate of precious yellow metal in international markets increased by $15 per ounce to $1,772.44, resulting in an increase in domestic prices of gold.

Meanwhile, gold rates in international market held steady today (Tuesday) and were heading for their biggest quarterly rise in more than four years as fears over rising coronavirus cases around the world boosted demand for the safe-haven metal.

Spot gold was mostly unchanged at $1,770.77 per ounce by 0052 GMT, just $8.29 shy of a near eight-year high of $1,779.06, hit last week.

Bullion, with more than 12% gains this quarter, is on track for its best quarter since end-March 2016. Gold was also headed for its third straight monthly gain.

U.S. gold futures were flat at $1,781.20. Confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide exceeded 10 million and deaths surpassed 500,000 over the weekend.
